How Stocks, Bonds, Commodities, and Gold Have Performed By Decade: 1920s-Present

This is a simple little chart that provides the returns of US stocks, US bonds, commodities, and gold since the 1920s.

The returns in the 2010s column hasn’t been updated since 2016, but it provides a quick glance at how various asset classes have performed over time and conveniently compares returns by decade. Returns are in real annualized terms, so inflation has been subtracted out.

Bonds and stocks are both good assets. Gold. Terrible. Cyclical? Bad, too.

Chris, Yep. Corporations create long-term real value (at least the good ones) and are thus investable, while commodities, precious metals, and currencies don't create value and are mainly things to trade to express a macro viewpoint.
